Roll With the {Punches}

Relationships are hard. And not just with a significant other. I'm talking about relationships with friends, siblings, co-workers, parents, aunts and uncles, significant others and their families...the world revolves around relationships. They're everywhere! And they're work. A lot of work.

I'm the one that people go to - I listen and give advice when it's asked of me. I'm always willing to lend a helping hand or do favors for people when in need because I know that I'm being helpful. I'm nice. I do my absolute best to keep my plans and be on time when I say I will as to not inconvenience those around me. But not everyone is this way. In fact, a lot of people aren't. They don't mull over their words before they say them as to not hurt others' feelings. Sometimes it makes me think if they care about anyone other than themselves at all...

Normally, I just accept what others say and/or do, knowing that that's just how they are, and I am how I am. But every now and then, I try to put my foot down and push back against those that are hurting me. But every time I stand up for myself or call someone out on something, I feel terrible. And by terrible, I mean that I will dwell on my force words and/or actions for hours and hours later, sometimes even days later if I don't have contact with that person. It's happened twice recently, and what I said to stand up for myself wasn't even that harsh. I'm a wuss...

But, I take the abuse over and over again because I'd rather my feelings be hurt or me to be put out than for it to be the other way around, which often results in my sadness and resentment against others for continually treating me badly. So let's face it, I'm a people pleaser. I show up. It's what I do.

People pleasers "want everyone around them to be happy and they will do whatever is asked of them to" keep it that way.

I struggle with this. Daily.

No matter how I feel, though, I continue to roll with the punches. These people are my family. These people are my friends. It's my problem, right?

Yes, it is my problem. But it's also up to me to do something about it. But that can also be tricky. What if I try to change things and it results in lost friendships and bad blood? What if the other party doesn't understand where I'm coming from and gets their feelings hurt? What if I stop hearing from these people? What if they begin to think of me as a bad friend? What if... What if... What if... I could drown in the what ifs. But it's got to stop.

I recently looked into this and found that consistently putting others' needs above my own could develop into some negative consequences, therefore causing other problems:

Neglect of self. People pleasers devote very little time to taking care of themselves. This can cause me to be more prone to health problems. Umm, no thank you!

Passive aggression and/or resentment. Being passive aggressive is making sharp comments, crack sarcastic jokes, or make subtle actions that let a little of our negative feelings seep out. Check! And apparently, this is the biggest destroyer of relationships. Awesome...

Reduces ability to enjoy other people and activities. Constantly thinking of all the things that need to be done, especially for others, leads us to be disengaged. What good does that do?! None, that's what. Being present but disengaged is not better than being absent.

Stress and depression. The definition of stress is having more demands than you can handle. This website says that people pleasing can turn into a vicious cycle of chronic stress and unhealthy behaviors. And who wants that added with other stressors of the world?

Be taken advantage of. By always saying yes to requests for favors, people may begin to take advantage of your kindss by asking for more than is reasonable. Even worse, you may become the target of exploitive people because they will quickly see that you can't say no and take as much as they can from you. {Okay, this one maybe takes it a little far, as I haven't personally experienced this yet, but I'd rather keep from doing so!}

So really, I must stop this behavior before it really causes chaos in my life. I tend to lean towards being passive aggressive with those that I feel are hurting me. I stew over it and don't let it go. But luckily, it hasn't developed into anything super serious where I'm constantly resenting those that I love or truly neglect myself {hey, I've recently lost 11 pounds, so you can't say I'm neglecting my health!}. But, why not just nip this in the bud right here and right now?! Well, it may take time, but I'm determined to do it. I've got to teach others that my opinion is important, too, and that my time is valuable. If I'm upset about something and feel the need to talk about it, I have to do so without letting the other person turn the focus of the conversation on them. Although this is hard to do with the elitists of the world, it'll be a work in progress. After all, there's a difference in being nice and being a people pleaser. I can still be me without being mean!

And the thing is, these people most likely don't even know that sometimes their actions and/or words hurt me, as I'm so used to just bottling it up and hiding my hurt feelings from everyone {besides my husband of course}. It's time to make some changes in this aspect of my life, and I've found 8 ways to be a God pleaser and not a people pleaser that I'm keeping close by:
  1. Be honest; no matter how hard it is to face the truth, remember that the only person you're cheating is yourself.
  2. Be humble; never get ahead of yourself and allow yourself room for growth.
  3. Dedicate time for God; dedicate a portion of your free time to God. Go to church. Pray. Allow God to be present in your life.
  4. Don't change who you are for others; you do not pray to your friends and family; therefore, you shouldn't change for them either. God wants you to be the best version of yourself. Do not be influenced by the people surrounding you, instead be influenced by the man who gave up everything for you.
  5. Hold on to your values; do not cave into temptation or evil. Deep down, you know the difference between right and wrong. Don't lose yourself trying to be something that you're not.
  6. Live every day like it's your last; never let a single second or minute get away from you. Live each day like it is your last because you are blessed to be alive with your family and friends. Life is unpredictable and will throw you curve balls, but remain appreciative to God for giving you the opportunity to live your dreams.
  7. Put others before yourself; God sacrificed himself so you could have a fulfilled life. Help others that are in need of assistance and charity. Your good deeds will not go unnoticed because God is always amongst us.
  8. Put your faith in Him; it may not always seem like he's listening, but God has a reason and a plan for everything. No matter how hard a situation may be, you must put your faith in God. He is the one person you can always count on.
Being aware of this 'problem' of mine is the first step. The second step: put a plan into action! It'll be a work in progress, but I've got to start somewhere! :) I got this. And until then, I'm just going to keep rollin' with the punches!

How do you balance others' happiness and your own?

August Cara Box {Reveal}

cara (car-rah) noun : beloved friend

Kaitlyn over at Wifessionals hosts the Cara Box Exchange every month. Well, she used to. The rules are changing a bit, so go check it out! Basically, you get paired with two women to get to know for the month. You send a box to one of them, and the other one sends a box to you! I've met some amazing women through this exchange, and I look forward to continuing my participation in this amazing exchange! This is only my second time to participate, and it was awesome, just as before! Go here to see my June Cara Box experience.
I was paired with Raewyn over at Warrior Queen and Jessica at A Different Kind of Plan. This month, Kaitlyn did a phenomenal job and paired everyone with someone in their age range and marital/child status. Both of these girls have amazing men by their side, just like I do! Head over to Raewyn's blog to meet this amazing girl and check out what I sent her. She's currently in wedding planning mode and is getting married on April 19th of next year! Girl, that's just 8 short months away! Good luck! :) But this girl seriously got me through some rough times this month. I look forward to keeping in touch with her!

I received a box from Jessica, and boy did she go all out! Seriously, she really outdid herself! She sent numerous items for a romantic spa date night in: sleep mask, bath soap, face masks, loufa, candles... wow! I can't wait to use this stuff! Maybe this weekend...we shall see!

She also wrote the sweetest note - sorry the picture is a little blurry - that really melted my heart. Thanks so much, Jessica! This girl really picked up on the big, true things in my life. Although, I've also been told I'm pretty transparent...oops! Oh well - that's what a blog is all about, right?! :)

This girl also sent me some amazing lists and post-its! As an avid list-maker - I'm in love! These will most definitely come in handy, and I've really been needing some new ones, so it's perfect!

She also included these Chihuahua tissues - because this month has been terrible to me, and, as she put it, it's okay to cry. Well, why not cry into these amazing tissues?! So super sweet and absolutely precious! And I had a good laugh - thanks Jessica! Perfect timing.

I also received two big bars of chocolate that may or may not have been devoured immediately. A girl after my own heart, I must say! They were delicous ;).  Also included was some under eye cream - I'm super busy in my life and there are many, many nights where I don't get enough sleep which equals tired eyes and dark circles. If I fall in love with it, it better not be too expensive, or my husband may not allow it, and we can't let that happen! Fingers crossed :).

I had a great experience this time around and I just love meeting new people! But, I must admit, I'm very excited that Kaitlyn has decided to change up the way she runs this exchange. Instead of it occurring monthly, it will be a span of three months. Let's face it, two weeks to get to know someone and then send a box of goodies to them is just not enough time! Especially when life happens. I admit I had to send my box to Raewyn a few days late due to my dental emergency, but thankfully she still received it in time! I look forward to coninuing with this wonderful exchange. I'm so blessed to know two more amazing women around the U.S. and to have found Kaitlyn's blog that allows me to meet amazing women! If you haven't participated yet, I strongly urge you to! September's pairings will be based on location, so I'm excited to maybe get to know some Texas women! And, if you're not a blogger, you can still participate! That's right - she will pair you with another non-blogger and y'all can still have the same experience. Seriously, what are you waiting for?! :)

I'm tired.

I'm tired. More than that, I'm exhausted, and my body hates me right now.

While I've seen so many people enjoying vacation after vacation and really living it up this summer, I've been working.  And not just your average, "this is the real, adult world and I have a job to be at every single day" kind of working. Nope. It's much, much more than that.

It's working two jobs PLUS overtime all.summer.long kind of working.

Here's what my average day looks like:
-Wake up at 4:00am
-Get ready for work
-Arrive at work at 6:00am
-WORK
-Get off work at 4:30pm (that's right, 10 hours [at least] EVERY DAY)
-Drive to second job
-Clock in at 5:00pm
-WORK
-Get off work at 9:00pm
-Arrive at home at 9:30pm
-Make/eat supper (all depends on the husband's work schedule)
-Shower
-Entertain the dog so he has some kind of stimulation for the day
-Blog (in all of my spare time)
-Spend about 5 minutes with husband once he gets home from work (usually around 10 or so)
-Go to sleep at 11:00pm

This happens every day, unless I specifically request off from job #2 or work 12 1/2 hours in one day for overtime instead of 10 1/2, etc.

And the weekends...well, let's see.  Saturday, I'm at work by 7:30 or 8 (depending on IT maintenance hours) and work until noon.  And for the past 11 weeks, I haven't really had time for myself - it's always going here or there or everywhere with things to do and people to see.  No wonder I'm worn out! Sheesh!  I look forward to the weekend in which I can literally spend in my pajamas, sleeping in late, and watching movies all day.  *sigh*

And to top it off, there are other responsibilities and commitments that I have to stay on top of...or try to at least.  I know that so many things are lacking in my life right now and not getting the right amount of attention that's truly needed, but I can't help it! I'm tired. Not to complain or anything...

Thank God for Colten.  Seriously, that man is nothing short of amazing! We have our ups and downs, sure! Every couple does. But without him, there's seriously no way I would be making it through this long summer! He picks up so much of the homelife duties, it's ridiculous. He vacuums, sweeps, cleans, does dishes, laundry, takes care of the dog, keeps up with our financial budget, listens to my nagging about my day, holds me when I'm upset ... and all on top of working full time and attending school full time! He's pretty much my superman ;). I am so unbelievably blessed to be his wife and to fully have his support. He's constantly telling me to take it easy every now and then and not earn every hour of overtime possible - yeah right! I then explain why it's necessary, and he gives me a giant hug and tells me that he loves me, on top of thanking me for all of the extra effort and hard work I'm putting in to earn every extra dollar that I can.

Okay, to explain a little further, overtime at the OAG is not something that comes along very often. In fact, this is the first time it's been offered in well over ten years. TEN YEARS, y'all! How can I not take full advantage of that?! Let me tell you. I can't. Simple as that! It's been available since mid-May and will continue through the month of August (the end of the fiscal year). So I've literally worked the entire summer, including overtime - about 70-hour weeks! But, it's only one more month, so I've got to kick it in gear, find some energy from somewhere, and push through this last month.  And for those that don't know, in order to earn overtime, you've got to work the regular 40 hour work week (rocket science, I know!), so that means you cannot call in sick or take a day of vacation in order to earn the overtime. That's right, we've been going to work sick.  But not super sick...thank goodness we've held off on that!

But in all of the long hours, stressful days, overwhelming feelings, and tears, I am blessed. I am so eternally grateful that this opportunity has presented itself. As a newlywed couple, we still struggle to make ends meet. Colten is still in school until the end of the year and we've got loans coming out of our ears! But seriously, money is tight. And in our moment of need, God provided a way for me to earn extra income! God is oh so good! Nevermind the exhaustion and burning want to just sleep an extra hour or two - there's money to be made! It's truly amazing what you can do if you put your mind to it. I perform on very little sleep each and every day [for the past 3 months] and I've survived. Yep, I'm still alive! (Hallelujah!) And just when I'm ready to say "enough is enough", I get to earn extra income for my family for another month! Praise God!

Along this journey, I've increased our income, leaned on my husband for support and was not disappointed in the least, celebrated triumphs with my family, laughed, loved, made new friendships, and furthered other friendships. Basically, I'm living life! And I couldn't be happier! Well, a few hours of sleep here and there and I'd be ECSTATIC! ;)

So, I'm tired. So what? Tired is temporary. Glory is forever! And I'm giving all the glory to God, the most deserving of it all. It's because of Him that I am able to accomplish the feats that I have.  It's because of Him that I'm able to get out of bed each and every day to face a new challenge and overcome obstacles.  It's because of Him that I have such an amazing support system that I can turn to no matter what. It's because of Him that my life is amazing and I am able to truly be thankful for it all.

How have you spent your summer? Are you ready for fall? I AM! :)

Carnival Craze

I participated in my first ever Cara Box exchange this month, sponsored by Kaitlyn at Wifessionals!

cara (car-rah) noun : beloved friend

The Cara Box Exchange is a monthly box swap with other women.  You can be a blogger or not, but you sign up over on Kaitlyn's blog - I highly recommend it!  You are then paired with two women, one that sends a box of goodies to you and one that you send a box of goodies to.  Over the course of the month, you pretty much stalk these two women in an attempt to really get to know them.  Well, you email them, too, of course ;).  This month, I was paired with two very amazing women: Brittany at Everyday Thoughts and Joanna at River City Essentials.   I sent a box to Brittany, which you can check out here, and Joanna sent a box to me!

Each month has a theme, and June's was 'Take Me to the Fair!'
She went with a carnival theme after learning that I'm a sucker for date nights with my hubby!

She learned fairly quickly that I love pink!  I hope it wasn't 'too' obvious! :)  Another part of the Cara Box is that you include an encouraging letter to the woman you're sending too - who doesn't love getting a box of goodies in the mail AND some encouragement from fellow women/bloggers?!  No brainer there!

Joanna included so many goodies!  She even thought of Ace, our sweet puppy!
Included were:
//Crystal Light lemonade
//super cute pink & white polka dot napkins
//ping pong balls and cups for a balltoss
//glitter pink nail polish & lipstick from pure romance
//animal crackers
//caramel corn popped chips
//elephant dog toy for Ace
//supplies for a kissing booth

I loved all of it! Thanks, Joanna!  Ace seriously is obsessed with his elephant - it's become his favorite toy and he drags it around everywhere he goes!  (if you follow me on Instagram {@brileigh12}, you've already seen a pretty funny video of him and his new friend) My husband also thanks you for the animal crackers - if only you could've seen his face, haha!  It was priceless!  We also plan to have some fun with the kissing booth soon, so stay tuned for that date night!

I've loved being a part of the Cara Box exchange and I will definitely participate again in the future!  I've met two great ladies and I look forward to following their journey and continue learning more about them. :)

A {Faithful} Reminder

Today, I just want to say that I am blessed, and that I want to and need to remind myself of this.

I am fortunate and grateful for amazing friends.

I am absolutely awestruck by my family's strong bond.

I am eternally blessed with an amazing support system (friends, family, co-workers, teachers, acquaintances...).

I am in pretty good health.

I know God and live by His will.

My husband absolutely cherishes me and makes my life complete.

My parents are encouraging, crazy, supportive, fun, outgoing, loving, and the best role models I could ever ask for.

My sister is so very strong, amazing, crazy, supporting, and the absolute best sister I could ever dream of having.

My brother is loving, outgoing, strong, fun, supportive, creative, and the most amazing little brother a girl could ever want.

I not only have one job, I have two.

My husband and I are making headway on our dreams, goals, and desires in life.

 I enjoy each day that I'm blessed to see.

I do not take life so seriously that I cannot fully enjoy it.

I bask in the joyful moments between my husband, family, friends, co-workers.

I have faith in humanity.

I do not live in fear.

I do not have hatred in my heart.

I do not question every single thing in the world.

I trust in God.

I am able to find peace and contentment among the violence, pain, and grief.

My positivity has become stronger and stronger, outweighing the negative aspects of every situation.

This list could go on, and on, and on, and on, and maybe I should've continued, but today, I just want to reassure everyone out there that no matter what you're going through, it could be worse.  That small melodramatic thing that's pressing on your mind and soul today, let it go.  Move on.

After last week's terrible tragedies and continued grief, today I'm reminding myself that I am lucky to be alive.  I have so many things to be thankful for and to cherish.  Petty grudges and arguments are not worth it.

God has a plan for my life, and so far, he's been so, so good to me!  I know that I'm not where I thought I would be at 24, but I absolutely love where I am.  I also know that this is not the end for me and my family - I know that I will ultimately be in a different place maybe even in a few short years, but I will cherish every minute that I am blessed with my loved ones and will not take today for granted.  Yes, it's Monday.  Most people today are sulking and feeling sorry for themselves because it means the beginning of a work-week.  BE THANKFUL that you have a work week!  BE THANKFUL that you get to fully live this day as God intended.  BE THANKFUL that you woke up this morning and have the amazing opportunity to live by His word and make a difference, no matter how small.

I am worthy of God's love.  YOU are worthy of God's love.  Take a few minutes today to pray to God and thank him for bestowing so many blessings (no matter how big or small, or overlooked) upon your life.

And I just HAVE to add this from one of my Facebook friend's statuses today:

The moment when peace finds you is when you accept everything for as it is now, not as how it was or will be.

My Very FiRST {Liebster}!

So, I know I'm new to the more in-depth blogging world, and I'm doing my best to get out there and engage with other bloggers as much as possible.  I have to admit though, that's tough when you're sick!  These past few days have been terrible, and I've slept through most of them (and I'm still tired).

However, I feel truly honored to have been nominated for my very first LIEBSTER award!  I was nominated by the lovely Martina @ Amazingly Blessed!  For all of you out there (I was there once, too) that don't know what a Liebster Award is .... It's awarded to people who have less than 200 followers, which I definitely fall under!  But I'm so touched by this nomination - thanks so much Martina!  :) I'm feelin' the love here, people!

The Rules:

1.  Share 11 facts about myself
2. Answer questions from my nominator
3. Nominate bloggers (with less than 200 followers) for the award
4. Create questions for nominees to answer
5. And when the nominee is finished, you must link it back to me (as I did above) in your blog post

11 Facts about {ME}

1. I'm completely content with spending time at home and not going 'out' to have a good time.
2. I love reading.  Seriously, I think I'm addicted.
3. I'm very family-oriented. They are my rock.
4. I work with victims of violent crime.  Which also means that I'm emotionally drained every day.
5. I am working very hard to deepen my faith
6. I hate working out.  I know it's necessary, but I don't have to like it.
7. I dream of having a big, loving family of my own.  (yes, that means BABIES...many years away)
8. I fear failure
9. I love grape fanta soda.  Don't judge me.
10. I'm a country girl.
11. My husband is my world and my rock.  He is always there for me & never questions me (hardly ever, anyway haha).

Martina's Questions for Me

1. How long have you been blogging?  Several years now, but I only began the more 'in-depth' blogging fairly recently - as in, a few months.

2. Are you afraid of the dark?  Nope!  Definitely when I was younger, though!

3. Coke or Pepsi?  Pepsi!  But I'm a Dr. Pepper lover at heart! :)

4. What is your cleaning schedule?  You mean people actually have a SCHEDULE for that stuff?!  Sheesh. (kidding..I know most do).  However, I do not.  We have a chart, and we strive to complete things off weekly...our schedules are all over the place, so it's never the same day or time or anything, really.

5. What/who made an impact on your life and why?  My parents, for sure.  They've had their share of ups and downs (I learn more and more every day), but I've never seen them as happy or as in love as they are today.  They inspire me and give me hope and strength.

6. Why do you blog?  I love words.  I love reading, and as a younger version of me, hated to write - I mean, essays, poems, research papers - I always knew I did NOT have a knack at writing.  However, I've learned that I truly do have 'a way with words' (sometimes) and it shows when I truly care about what the subject of my writing is.  It also helps family and friends to keep up with 'me', and to just shout at the world that I am who I am, I like what I like, and MY LIFE WOULD SUCK WITHOUT ME! :)

7. What is your favorite meal?  Chicken Parmesan.  Hands down.

8. Early bird or night owl?  I'd say a little of both?  Now that I have a grown-up job, I have to be up by 5:30 (soooo early!), but I still find myself staying up late, especially on weekends!

9. What is the best advice you can give someone?  To live life to its fullest every.single.day!  We are not guaranteed tomorrow, and to worry about petty things does not bring happiness!

10. Do you like Spring, Summer, Fall, or Winter?  Winter!!  Those that know me well know that I absolutely love cold weather!  The Texas heat, I could live without...

11. Have you ever been camping?  Yes!  We used to go all the time when we were kids!  My parents gave us a choice: a new house or to buy a boat.  We were small children at the time, so of course we chose the boat!  So, we now own a boat many many years later, and we still enjoy an outing every now and then (it's way overdue!).
