It's {Time}...

I just can't take it anymore! I'm seriously annoyed by people continuously using improper grammar. Seriously! Now, I'm not saying I'm perfect, because I definitely make my fair share of mistakes {and ironically, I'm sure there are a few mistakes in this grammar-focused rant}, but is it really too much to ask to just get the basics down? 


From blogs {which are much less common}, to Facebook, twitter, to essays, to speaking ... it seems as if grammar is just not as important to the human race as it needs to be. Seriously! I'm talking about important things here, like the use of "your" and "you're",  "then" and "than", and "their", "they're", and "there", just to name a few! These top ten pretty much sum it up:


I used to try to just ignore it. I mean, the mistakes are everywhere! However, I just can't take it anymore! It's time to take a stand against improper grammar and for people everywhere {from kids to adults} to learn the correct way to speak and write. Is it really too much to ask? I don't think so. 


It's one thing to shorthand in texts or things of that nature, but when it's for all the world to see, can we please try a little harder? I really believe that if things keep going the way they are, we're all doomed! Just think about it, it's only going to get worse and worse. Then, these same people that can't write or speak one proper sentence are going to be running corporate America one day {or, something along those lines}! Is that what we want? Where does it go from there? It's chaos, I tell you! Maybe you don't feel as passionate about this problem as I do, and maybe I'm blowing it a bit out of proportion {although I'm totally not}, but the fact of the matter is that "B4", "goin", or "gonna be" JUST AIN'T CUTE! {improper grammar completely intended there}

With that being said, I'm very thankful for all of you out there that do take pride in speaking proper English {at least most of the time}. I've come across so many blogs that are beautifully written, complete with correct punctuation and everything! Because, let's face it, punctuation saves lives!
 
Poor grandma! I'm sure she might be a little tough to chew...
 
So, the next time you type up a blog post, Facebook status, tweet, research paper, journal entry, or what have you, think about using the proper form of words and putting punctuation where it needs to be! Run-on sentences aren't cute, people! They make you look stupid. Point blank. I'm not saying that you have to be correct 100% of the time, but when it counts, make your writing count! You're already going through the effort to form paragraphs and put thoughts down on paper, why not do it correctly?!

Life {Lately}

Life lately has been hectic! I keep drifting back to this ol' blog of mine and wanting to fully immerse myself in all of its glory and amazingness {hey, to me, it's totes amazing!}, but then life gets in the way. But, at least I have a life!
 
Well, that's not a good excuse anymore! The point is to blog about this great life of mine, so I need to figure something out to where this ol' blog gets more of my attention! Thus begins Operation: Life Management. Seriously. My life needs to be managed much, much better!
 
Why is it that I have an amazing Erin Condren life planner and I still seem to not be able to keep up with the days and weeks and blogging and living and being a wife and being a friend and being a daughter and a sister and a cousin and having relaxing days and catching up on television shows and providing ample doggy time with Ace and keeping up with house chores and helping my hubby with schoolwork and work two jobs?! Oh, because that's a LOT! That's why. Okay *exhales*.  But wait, doesn't this only get worse with kids?! Joy...

And although I'm not doing so well with this whole 'management' of my life, I'm definitely not complaining! So much has been going on and I'm loving every bit of it! And I need to blog about a lot of it still {it's coming, just you wait and see!}. So, I won't spoil the lovely surprise of what is to come in future posts, but I did post about some of the exciting things that have happened recently, like that time we went to Dallas to support our cousin in the only way we know how - stand out and quite possibly be a little bit super embarrassing, and my birthday was this past weekend! With my birthday came my 30 before 30 list, so be sure to check that out! 
 
 
Some not-so-great things have also been going on recently, and I'm still working through those. I pray about them daily and turn over my hesitation, anger, and frustration over to God, for I know that he's got it all under control. Hey, I'm learning! I used to try to fix everything on my own and in my own way, only to have it backfire and cause more stress in my life. One step at a time. God's got me! And while He does, I continue to pray, because prayer is powerful, and in some moments, prayer is all that I have. BUT, I will not allow for these negative aspects take over my life, so I'm pushing to work through them in a positive manner and learn how to dance through the storms instead of drowning in them. :) 
 
 
I struggle with control. I apparently strive to control every aspect of my life {at least the important aspects}. But I've learned from experience that the way to make God laugh is to make plans, and boy has God been laughing at my expense lately! This is a learning process, and I'm figuring it out along the way, so bear with me!
 
I took to running recently when all I wanted to do was curl up in bed and cry hysterically over something I couldn't control. That's right - I ran! It might not have been for very long, but it was therapeutic! I ugly cried as I ran in the country, with nothing but nature surrounding me, and it was great! I took my headphones and ran. Literally. And every single song that came on was perfect for the emotions I was feeling. Did I know that this too, shall pass? Yes. Did I know that those words weren't absolutely true? Of course. But I was able to release my feelings and do so in a positive manner, so it was rewarding! Boy do I wish I still lived in the country to take to running each and every time that I needed to release my frustrations. But, it's a step in the right direction, and I felt much better afterward.
 
 
So, as with all things in life, I've got some positive and some negative things going on, all which make up my crazy world. I wouldn't trade it for a single minute! I know that the trials and tribulations that I'm experiencing are only going to make me stronger and better equipped for what is yet to come. And I know that I must cherish every minute that I get to spend with my loved ones because time is precious and is not guaranteed.
 
So...life lately has been pretty typical, with highs and lows, tears of joy and tears of sadness and hurt, and mixed emotions. Isn't that what it's all about?? ;)  But Operation: Life Management is definitely going to happen so that I can at least feel in control of what I can.
 
And in other, super awesome news, it's COLD today! Okay, not 'cold', but it's super cool outside, the wind is blowing, and the sun is hiding behind clouds and stormy weather all day long. I'm one happy, happy girl!

Newlywed Game {Take 6}

So, it's been a while since Colten and I linked up for The Newlywed Game!  I think it's time for a little fun amidst all of the chaos this week has brought. 
 
  
1. If your spouse could have one thing in the world (besides millions of dollars) what would it be?
Bri: A really, really big truck.  Like, seriously lifted.
Colten: It would be for her late Grandmas to have been at our wedding in person and for her to be able to spend more time with them.  (y'all. this man is so sweet and knows my heart)


2. Is your spouse an early bird or a night owl?
Bri: Definitely a night owl!  That man could stay up until 2am and sleep until noon every single day if I'd let him and he wasn't employed.  *sigh*
Colten: Oh she is definitely not an early bird - she is a night owl.

3. Does your spouse do anything weird or silly when they are nervous? If so, what?
Bri: Not really.  He's pretty laid back and doesn't get nervous very often.  Maybe he will on graduation day!
Colten: She really doesn't do anything weird or silly.  Her stomach just gets in knots.

4. What is the most spontaneous thing you have ever done as a couple?
Bri: Wow, great question.  I honestly have no idea!
Colten: Spend money when we were not even planning on it.

5. What makes your spouse different/special from any other person you know?
Bri: He puts up with me!  I can be a lot to deal with sometimes (shocker, I KNOW!), but he doesn't even hesitate - he gives me the space I need in the moment and then comes to give me a giant hug! He understands me in a way that no one else does, and he's constantly showing his everlasting love for me. 
Colten: She is my wife.  Everything is special about her. (again, this man just melts my heart!)

6. In the summertime, does your spouse most resemble a white snowman, a red lobster, or a very tan Pauly D?!
Bri: Ahahahaha!  Well, in the beginning of summertime, he is most definitely a white snowman!  He then slowly turns to a red lobster - he's a fish and LOVES being in the pool - without sunscreen.  I'm working on him! 
Colten: Well, she is a white snowman trying to become a tan one.

7. What is one thing that people may not know about your spouse?
Bri: He is so loving and supportive.  Many people get the impression that he's a 'redneck' and that's all there is to him.  WRONG!  There are so many interior layers to him that not many people get to see.  It's definitely something special, and I'm so glad I'm peeling back all of those layers! :)
Colten: She loves to read.

8. What is your spouse’s favorite holiday?
Bri: I'm going to say Thanksgiving, because there is lots of food involved!
Colten: Christmas is her number one holiday. (yes!)

9. There is a table full of food. Salad, meat, bread, desserts. Which dish does your spouse devour first?
Bri: SALAD!  That man can tear up a salad like it's nobody's business.  I'm not complaining though, as it's better for him than devouring many other unhealthy things! 
Colten: She will go for either the meat or the salad, whichever one she wants at the time.

10. I am so thankful that my spouse is ______________ because I am definitely not!
Bri: I'm so thankful that my spouse is calm because I am definitely not!  Seriously, he does stress sometimes,but he just doesn't let most things get to him.  He doesn't worry when it's unnecessary.  Me on the other hand, I worry about everything all the time!  It's something I struggle with and am constantly working on.  And also something he constantly reminds me about - it's a bad habit!
Colten: She is very book smart and knows how to study because I most definitely am not.

Blog {Overhaul}

So much NEW!  
 
I'm very happy to have a new look to my blog!  
 
It definitely feels more like 'me', and I hope it's not TOO bright or busy or anything.  BUT, if you have a strong opinion about it (love it, hate it, whatever...), please let me know!  It's still a work in progress, but it's getting there!

Welcome to the {Real World}

Working two jobs is hard! 

Seriously, I have major respect for everyone out there who has to do just that, or worse & work THREE or more jobs, in order to make enough to get by in today's society.  Everyone always asks me, "Why do you still work at HEB?  Didn't you get a job with your degree?"  Well, the answers to those are: Yes, I got a job with my degree, and I still work at HEB because it's a great place to be employed, and it's good money that I can earn in addition to my new, awesome salary job.  Let me explain...

For two years, I had been working at HEB part-time while attending college.  It was great, easy money to be honest.  It's not difficult, other than standing on your feet for 6+ hours at a time without being able to walk around...  Other than that, you ring people up, bag their groceries, deal with the attitudes and tempers of customers, hand back change if applicable, and wish them a great rest of their day!  Simple.  I'm truly and eternally grateful for the opportunity that I've had to be a part of the HEB team! 

Instagramed last week!

So, last year around this time, I got the phone call that I had been chosen for a position as a Legal Assistant/Paralegal (where I currently work, they do not differentiate between the two).  Of course I said yes right away!  How amazing to have secured a job only 2 months after obtaining a college degree?  Needless to say, I was so excited!  Funny thing was that I got the call while I was at work at HEB.  Immediately, I went to my manager and told her the great news!  She was so awesome about it and worked with me to figure out where to go from there.  I didn't want to quit, at least not right away.  Most jobs nowadays, there is a 90-day probationary period - and if I quit my secured job, what would I be left with?  I definitely didn't want to find out!  So, I told her I'd work the following weekend, as orientation for the new job was on Monday (the call came in on Thursday).  She made the necessary notes and was sure that my schedule the following week only had me working Saturday and Sunday.  I changed my availability to only weekends, in the morning, and that was that.  My parents helped in my decision to work two jobs.  The main points: I'm young, with financial responsibility, with no children, and the mental and physical ability to perform my duties well with both employers.  Point taken.  And welcome to the real world! 

The next few months went smoothly.  I was fitting in at the new job and was learning about my role therein, and I loved it!  To this day, almost a year later, I've not once dreaded going into work.  And that's special, people!  I'm so blessed and thankful that God has given me this opportunity - to enjoy what I'm doing and to love my co-workers!  I know how rare that combination is, and I wouldn't trade it for anything!  With that said, it was a long 6 months working 7 days a week!  It was also difficult on our new marriage, seeing as all of this happened only 3 months after our wedding day.  So, for a big part of our first year of marriage, we hardly got to see each other!  I was literally working all of the time, and when I wasn't, I was going back home to visit with family because Colten's work schedule was sporadic, but he always worked on weekends.  When he wasn't working, he was going to school to finish his degree.  Talk about hectic! 


We take advantage of any and all time we get together!


Fast forward to that 6-month mark, and I was exhausted.  Seriously.  I was so worn-out and didn't have any time for myself or my hunny.  So, a decision had to be made: either stay miserable because we really couldn't afford me not to work two jobs, or do something about it!  I made the decision to work the same number of hours (12) a week, but to work during the week instead of on weekends, so that I would at least have 2 days a week to be off and take care of others things, such as myself, our marriage, my husband, my family, my friends, housework....I think you get the point here.  So, now I work Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights after job #1, for four hours a day.  So, I'm making the same amount of money, but I have my weekends free! Yay!  However, recently, this has proven to be difficult.  I don't know why, but those 16-hour days have really been getting to me lately!  


So, for the last 6 months, I've worked on this schedule, and it's really proven to be loads better than working 7 days a week!  Yes, I have three extremely long days during the week, but it's worth it to have those few days off - even if Colten works every single weekend...we at least get Friday evening, Saturday morning, and Sunday morning together!  I take any time we get together!  But I won't try to hide the fact that it's still extremely stressful.  It does put a strain on my life and our marriage, and I see it.  My husband sees it too.  He would love to have me home more often so that we could spend more time together, and he feels the brunt of this situation at home.  He takes on a big part of the home-life responsibility - cleaning, cooking, laundry - and for that, I'm so grateful!  I've really been trying to be more well-rested and energized lately so that I can help out more around the house.  I accomplished the kitchen yesterday, and it felt great!  Needless to say, it's been a challenge, but it's also been worth it.  You make sacrifices when and where you can, and it's so important to keep your priorities straight!  Colten and I are stronger than ever and are more in love than ever.  That's not to say that some days are harder than others, but God has seen us through so much, and I know that this is His journey for us at this time in our lives.  We have had our differences in opinion during this time of change, but we always talk through it, agree on an answer, and learn more and more about each other along the way!


The end will come, and I know that.  I know that I won't have to work two jobs forever and that Colten and I's schedules will one day be the same, if not similar, where we leave for work and come home every day roughly at the same time.  Man, that sure does sound amazing right about now!  But, I am thankful for the opportunity to work two jobs, especially in this economy when most people have difficulty finding one job.  I'm also thankful for my husband.  He has been so understanding with everything and has supported me through this time of change.  We've grown closer together as a couple through all of this, and we know that change will come again in the future.  It's part of life.  And I'm also so very thankful for my family.  They have supported me 100% through this difficult time - and let me tell you, there were many days when I didn't know which way was up or what I was doing anymore.  It's emotionally and physically exhausting, and I'm learning to cope with that.

Job #1 is very emotional, as I work with victims of violent crime on a daily basis.  But, I love what I do!  I truly get to feel that I'm making a difference in people's lives, and I get to perform legal duties every day, working alongside other legal assistants and attorneys!  I've been getting more and more responsibilities, and I love it!  I also have to 'dress up' for this job every day, so my wardrobe has also improved :).  What girl wouldn't love that!?

Then, job #2 is physically draining, being on my feet for so long, stuck in a little square box.  But, on the good nights, I get to go home to my husband, knowing it was all worth it, and when I'm lucky, I get amazing back massages :). 

So, my mid-week consists of going straight from job #1 to job #2, complete with changing clothes in HEB's restrooms every single one of those days.  I go from office chic to HEB grunge (as I call it)!  Haha.  It's pretty funny, I suppose.  But, such is life, and as I tell myself so many times, WELCOME TO THE {REAL WORLD}! 

In addition to that, I just want to throw out there that I'm in the top 5 fastest cashiers at HEB right now - #2 to be exact!  I'm pretty proud of that, seeing as I'm pretty exhausted by the time I get there, and my energy only fades...


So, I'm living life in the real world, with all of the ups and downs that go with it!  I just wanted to share this part of me, as it's a biggie!  And if anyone wishes to offer any advice or opinions on how to cope with this situation, I'm all ears!  We've got a handle on it, but ones situation could always improve, right?!  :)

Bri: He had a genuine-ness about him.  Even though I wasn't single at the time, he said he was going to wait for me, and he did!  That's special right there, people!
Colten: Everything.

2. What is your spouse's most annoying habit?
Bri: Dipping tobacco :(
Colten: I don't ever notice anything that much...oh, she snores!

3. Does your spouse have to sleep on 'their side of the bed', if so, which side?
Bri: We do have our sides, mine on the right and his on the left, but I tend to toss and turn throughout the night...sorry babe!
Colten: I wish it were so, but she likes to sleep all over the bed!

4. How are you planning to spend Valentine's Day?
Bri: Simple night in - homemade pizza and movie night!
Colten: Make homemade pizza and watch movies.

5. Who usually ends up trying to resolve an argument?
Bri: We both talk it out.  It's one of the amazing things I love about our marriage!
Colten: Both of us!

6. How many kids do you plan to have one day, if any?
Bri: 2 or 3
Colten: 600!  No, 4.  All boys! (umm, I don't think so!!!)

7. What is your spouse's best friend's name and do you get along with them?
Bri: Kyle, and we get along :).
Colten: Hilary.  Yes, we get along.  They're sisters!

8. If your spouse one day told you that they are an ex-convict, how would you react?
Bri: I'd be a little freaked out to be honest!  But I'd definitely want to know what he did...
Colten: 'Ok. You aren't going back to jail are you?'

9. Do you wish your spouse would stop doing a particular routine?
Bri: Staying up until all hours of the night playing video games.
Colten:  She doesn't really have a particular routine.  Unless she has a routine I don't know about!  (haha!)

10. Did the honeymoon go exactly as planned?
Bri: Yes! It was perfect.
Colten: Yeah, it was a honeymoon!

1. What is the worst thing that happened on your wedding day, if anything?

Bri: Several things 'happened' that I would have liked not to have (read about them ALL here), but the worst was probably that one of our groomsmen's vests wasn't the right color, which left him the odd man out.  Nothing super drastic, but it was very difficult to not have my grandma there, who passed away tragically just 5 days prior. 

Colten: Nothing. 



2. Who is the better driver?

Bri: Definitely me!  He loves the gas pedal, then the brake, then the gas pedal ... you get the picture.

Colten: Me, duh!



3. If someone had to play your spouse in a movie, who would it be?

Bri: Luke Bryan please :)

Colten: Her mom because they're so much alike.



4. What your spouse's favorite comfort food?

Bri: Totino's pizzas haha

Colten: Chocolate, duh!



5. Which one of you hogs all the covers in bed?

Bri: It varies... a few times it'll be me, then it'll be him.  I guess we share the blame on this one!

Colten: She does.



6. The saying “opposites attract" must be true because

my spouse and I couldn’t be any more different when it comes to _________?

Bri: TV shows we watch.  I like ones such as Grey's Anatomy, Parenthood, Pretty Little Liars, etc.  He goes for Moonshiners, Amish Mafia, and The Walking Dead.  We are also very different with movies - typical guy, he likes action, horror, and the really-stupid-so-it's-kind-of-funny movies, whereas, typical girl, I go for the romantic comedies mostly :).

Colten: What we like to do for fun. I play video games and she reads.



7. If your spouse won $5000, what would they spend it on?

Bri: He'd use it to pay off some of our debt, or for a car downpayment.

Colten: Student loans.

8. If your spouse could be married to any famous person, which would it be and why?

Bri: I honestly have no idea!  I guess I'm going to have to find out! He's not really one to follow all of that stuff, but I'm going to learn something new on this one ;).

Colten: Probably Luke Bryan because she thinks he's hot! 



9. Who controls the remote??

Bri: Most often, it's me. 

Colten: We both do, really.



10. If your spouse was a superhero, what would their "super power" be?

Bri: To fly! (totally guessing here)

Colten: The ability to read every book at one time. 



My husband is a man of few words, obviously.  But this was so fun! 



#SheReadsTruth

I've recently discovered She Reads Truth, a blog devoted to sharing the truth of God's word with women.  From what I've experienced so far, they have ongoing 'plans', and they use the YouVersion bible app to help do so.  I caught the end of the Fresh Start plan, which was 19 days long and had begun on January 1st.  Since that time is up, a new plan is in place.  This plan, I believe, has already been done before, but they had so much success and positive feedback the first time, they decided to do it again!  It's called the Soul Detox plan.  Today is day three, and so far, I'm loving it!  I can definitely tell why this plan has come back around! 


She Reads Truth can also be found on Instagram and Twitter!  It's very motivating to see all of the dedication and commitment that this community puts forth every day!  It's also great for me, because I can take it with me on the go.  The daily readings aren't super long, although some days are longer than others, and the devotional content (the in-depth analysis) is amazing!  I feel energized and inspired every day!  What could be better than that? 

How about the fact that in using their 'Weekly Truths', they always have an iPhone lockscreen created with the bible verse of that week.  It seems that they don't keep up with it every week though, and I found myself wanting more.  I downloaded and used their lockscreen from Day 6 of the Fresh Start devotional: The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still - Exodus 14:14.  From memory, folks!  It's helped me memorize this verse, as it's a powerful one!  But there are so many others that I want to begin to memorize and really live through.  So, this is where I came to a standstill.  Still, I wanted more.  I browsed around through old Weekly Truths with lockscreens, and saved several for the future.  But I was hungry.  I wanted yet MORE!  Let's face it, how many times do you look at the lockscreen of your phone?  Many, MANY times a day!  Such a great way to memorize Scripture. 

Thus began my hunt for a way to find more scripture-based pictures that I could save and use as my lockscreen.  But I quickly learned that many of the ones that already exist were not quite what I was going for.  I needed something to be simple, yet draw me in at the same time, so that I would really read the words I was looking at.  Again, I saved the few that I actually liked.  I even went as far as to purchase the 'Bible Lock' app (luckily, it was only $.99).  However, I still wasn't fully satisfied.  Which led me to come to the sad realization that I was going to have to figure out how to make my own!  What better way to really get what you want anyway?

So last night, the research began.  I spent HOURS perusing forums, blog posts, and random websites.  As with all research, you have those finds that are real treasures, but you also have the epic failure finds as well.  I sorted through what I had, and decided to give it a go.  Why not? 

Well, maybe because it was going to be much more of a challenge than I had anticipated.  For those of you that don't know me very well, I'm not very creative.  I know what I like and what I don't like, but as far as getting to that point, well, I suck.  This led to a huge portion of time in just playing with the way everything looked, making sure the fonts were the same, the colors matched, the pixel size was just right, and so on and so forth.  Sheesh!  Talk about a major project!  And now, if you don't know me, you're probably thinking that I'm pretty technology-illiterate and have no place attempting what I was.  The latter may be true, but I'm actually pretty good with computers and programs and settings, etc.  I also love photography, but it's the creative aspect that I lack (weird combination, I know).  However, I muddled through figuring it all out, and I was left with a gorgeous depiction of my all-time favorite Scripture!  So far, it had worked.  But then the test was to get it onto my phone and in place as the lockscreen.  One hurdle at a time I suppose. 

I got it to my phone and was very hopeful that all would turn out as I had planned.  Well, two touches of the screen to put it as my lockscreen and .... VOILA!  I had a beautiful reminder of this verse to look at every time I went to my phone.  This may seem to be something small that most of you could do in a matter of minutes, but I felt so accomplished!  I was soooo excited - just ask my husband.  I'm pretty sure he was very 'over' me telling him to look at it and to see what I had done!  I was pretty much on cloud 9, especially after realizing what lies ahead - so many verses and lessons to learn!  The possibilites are endless, and I'm so excited to really get into it!  And not only with learning Scripture .... this is going to help my blog tremendously as well!  Headers, buttons, fonts, tools ... my husband is in for many nights of, "Ooohh, look at this", "Look what I just did", "Another one!", "Babe, come HEREEE".  Oh well, he loves me and always supports me, and this new venture is no different.  He was proud that I accomplished this on my own (well, with the help of the Internet of course...).

And now, the unveiling of my masterpiece! 



This verse is near and dear to my heart.  It was also the center of our wedding day, as we had it printed on the back of our wedding koozies, of which I still have a ton to use not only as a holder for my drink, but also as a reminder of our special day and that God is a major part of not only my life but of our lives together.  I'm pretty stoked about this creation and look forward to making many, many more!  I'm super proud of myself and can't wait to learn more!  This is definitely going to come in handy as I go through the Soul Detox and other plans.  Favorite verses are going to stick out to me, and I'm going to know exactly what to do with them. 

So, thank you She Reads Truth.  Thank you for this new love and passion that has developed in me.  :-)

Surprisingly Satisfied

Judging by our current position in line as women today, in this culture, the 'secret' to being content has been manipulated and misunderstood.  What we hear described as the secret of our satisfaction sounds a lot different than it did when it was first spoken and handed down many centuries ago.  Today, we hear a philosophy of happiness that's actually been training us for a long time not to be happy.  It says there's always something else, something more, some additional requirement we need before we can really enjoy life the way it was meant to be enjoyed.  So, the advertisements bombard us with suggestions, dripping with recommendations intended to whet our appetites and tantalize our taste buds, encouraging us to get rid of the old and acquire the new. 

If you're single, you should have the security of marriage.
If you're married, you should have the freedom of singleness.
If you live in an apartment, you should own a home by now.
If you own a home, it should be bigger than the one you've got.

Getting the message?

Your clothes should be from this vendor.
Your appearance should look like that trend.
Your kids should be more like those kids.
Your standard of success should be measured by these standards.

The fallout from this is inevitable.  Fed by such a steady diet of unclaimed desires, we can hardly help but develop a level of disdain for our current circumstances.  Caught in this vicious cycle, we consequently feel incomplete and substandard.  Unhappy.  Uncontrolled.  Unfulfilled.  Dissatisfied. 

This is precisely why a satisfied woman is such a surprising woman.  She is shockingly noticeable to a world that lives on a watered-down version of the secret - a secret that she obviously got the truth about.  Contentment wasn't some unique gift the apostle Paul had been given.  It was a skill he had chosen and adopted, then had mastered and applied to his tumultuous life experience.  As a result, he could say with biblical assurance:

"I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am"

Philippians 4:11


Paul's secret was this: he had resolved to be content

Just imagine - being completely content in everything you have and do.  Do you have your dream job?  Do you own and wear the finest clothes?  Are you perfectly happy with the people in your life?  Your friends?  Your family?  Your significant other?  Are you content with the path you are headed down that leads to your future?  Are you? 



For most of us, the answer is 'no' to at least the majority of those questions.  Or if not, it was at some point in your life.  This definitely hits home for me.  I find myself dissatisfied in my life in several aspects.  Just last week, I was a frustrated blogger, not knowing what to do or really what exactly it was I wanted.  I just knew I wanted more.  However, I am reminded by Paul's determination and acceptance to be content with what I have.  The more you believe that God's grace to you is overflowing, the more you'll be convinced that you will always have everything you need.  I need to put my complete trust in God that he will grant me the supply I need to excel at His purposes.  If I do'nt have it - whatever it is - I don't need it.  I may WANT it, but it's not necessary in order to accomplish what He knows is most important for my life today.  I'm resolving to be more understanding and to be more content in my life and the blessings that have been bestowed upon me.  Every decision I need to make, every task I need to accomplish, every relationship I need to navigate, every element of daily life I need to traverse, God has already perfectl ymatched up with an equivalent-to-overflowing supply of His grace. 

Now, I'm not saying that this isn't difficult - because it's definitely not an easy thing to accomplish ... this being content.  It's hard work.  Some days, we break, and no amount of consoling is going to alleviate the situation.  But in the midst of those discouraging days, it's a great reminder to know that God supplies us with the grace and mercy to face our demons head-on.  And I must admit, that when I step back from my current discouraging circumstances (it's always something, let's admit it), I am surprisingly satisfied.  I am learning to not judge my life based on the luxuries that others may have.  We don't know everyone's story.  They may have something that you want, but you don't know what they've had to sacrifice or lose to get it. 

What might God be trying to grow in your character or cement in your relationship with Him by keeping you separated from some of the things you want but don't yet have?

On Death and Dying

I don't know what it is about today, but everywhere I turn, there's death. There's loss and suffering. There's pain and sadness. There's hope and life.

Many friends on Facebook are posting about lost loved ones within these past few days - at least three. And ironically, I happen to watch the Army Wives episode that is the post trying to rebuild after the bombing at the Hump Bar (season 2, episode 1). And boy is it terribly sad. 4 killed and 15 injured, 3 critical. I know it's just a TV show, but it draws real emotions. It shows how, in such a short time, life can change. Death is obviously a part of life, but that doesn't mean it's easy. Of course it's not easy. It's hard. Heart-in-a-blender-pulsed-on-high hard. How do you deal with it? There is no answer. There is no easy button. There's only ways to help cope. And sometimes that's not even enough. But we've got to remember that those lost loved ones, no matter how old, are in the glorified presence of God, at peace. They are watching over us and smiling upon us. And in the case of all of my lost loved ones, they are looking down on me, shaking their heads at me for being so utterly sad. They are in Heaven. At peace. With no worries. But sometimes it doesn't make it any easier.

So, take the time to tell your loved ones that you love them. Kiss them and hold them tight. Every day is a gift; don't take it for granted. I know I don't. And I pray. Lots and lots of prayer. And hope. Hope, no matter how bleak, will get you through the mightiest storms.

But sometimes the scariest times are thinking of losing your loved ones. That fear and anxiety. Not knowing when the last day will be their last day. And my own last day. I know that my time here on earth is also short-lived. My last day will come when it's my time. And that still scares me. I know that I will bask in His glory once I'm no longer in my physical body, but it's also the unknown. And I fear the unknown. But in increasing my faith, I know that God has His plan for me and that I will be eternally at peace in Heaven with everyone I've ever lost, and then some. But for now, right now, it scares me. So, I pray that my education in my faith increases and I will reach a point where I am no longer afraid. I am confidant I will get to that point before my time on earth is up. I just have to keep working on it. And I will. I just have to keep up my hope. And pray :).

The Worst of Times

Sunday morning's sermon was very eye-opening, and quite honestly could not have come at a better time!  In life, we get so caught up in the hustle and bustle, and when things don't go our way, or in some or most instances, go completely awry, we are stressed and 'freak out'.  I admit, I've had so many of these 'freak outs' that I can't even begin to count them.  But, as discussed this past Sunday, we are so burdened with tunnel-vision, that we cannot see anything outside of the terrible things that are happening to us, in which we are so quick to place blame.  Instead, we need to turn to God and praise Him.  Philippians 4:4-8 is the go-to passage for these not-so-easy-to-be-thankful moments:

Rejoice in the Lord always.  I will say it again: Rejoice!  Let your gentleness be evident to all.  The Lord is near.  Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.  Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things.

We are being told to always rejoice in the Lord.  No matter the situation, especially in the worst of times, turn to him, with thanksgiving (which, let's admit, it's hard to be thankful for what we have when we're faced with hardship) and give Him thanks!  Rejoice (it's so important that it's said TWICE) in what you have been blessed with and do not worry.  'Do not be anxious about anything.'  This is probably the hardest part for me.  For example, when burdened financially - let's say quite a bit more money was taken from my account for student loans than what we were told - I asked, how am I supposed to NOT be anxious?  Of course I was anxious!  It was our finances and it put us in quite the bind.  However, I did not let it seethe within myself.  As always, the good Lord provides, and he allowed us to be helped where help could be given.  And for that, I am eternally grateful.  When school wasn't quite going as well as I was wanting, I was completely anxious, but I wasn't supposed to have been.  Instead of only seeing the hardship that was my Kinesiology education, I had to be thankful for everything else that I had and know that God would get me through it.  And boy, did he ever?!  I took a complete 180 degree turn in life and pursued my paralegal degree, and now I'm at a job that I thoroughly enjoy!  It is true - do not be anxious about anything and rejoice!  I know that it's easier said than done, but it all happens for a reason.  So, I challenge you.  We all know that tragedy and hardship strikes nearly every day - but it's up to you how you take that and deal with it.  I challenge you to write this scripture verse down and put it somewhere that you can come back to.  And when things aren't looking your way, pull it out and remember to present your requests, with thanksgiving, to God, and always think about anything that is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, or praiseworthy in your life.  Think about all of the good that outweighs the bad.  I challenge you to not let the worst of times overwhelm you.  I challenge you to pray.  I challenge you to let go, and let God. 

This sermon was such a great reminder - especially because I get so down on myself when things aren't going right.  I don't like for things to be out of my control, but that's part of life.  I logically know that I cannot be in control at all times, because only God is in control of my life.  It's hard to let go, but I'm trying more and more each and every day.  And lately, I see and know that it's working.  While I was sick these past few days, it was dreadful.  I felt miserable and had no energy whatsoever, but I was thankful for my family and my husband for helping to take care of me and provide for me in what I needed.  I was thankful for the shelter I was able to confine to and for the food I was able to eat.  There is so much good in my life, it helped my sickness be more bearable.  I have a post-it note on my computer monitor reminding me:
Sometimes, the best thing you can do is not think, not wonder, not imagine, not obsess.  Just breathe, and have faith that everything will work out for the best.  Let go and let God. 
I love seeing the reminder every single day.  There's also one particular song that comes into mind in helping deal with the worst of  times: Gary Allan's "Every Storm".

This is such a great reminder that it's going to happen - there's no way that we can go through life with no storms to weather.  But, every storm runs out of rain.  Every dark night turns into day.  It's going to run out of pain and sting.  If God puts you to it, He'll get you through it.  I personally know that the last thing you want to have lectured to you is that it'll get better, that things are going to look up.  But it's true.  It is going to get better.  You've got to keep on keepin' on and not let the 'thorns' of life keep you down.  Lean on your friends, family, and most importantly, God, and you'll get through the struggles of life.  Because part of living life is enduring the storms that are placed in our path.  You've got to enjoy life and make the most of what you're given, and this song is definitely motivation to do so.  Don't wait for your life to start, because in doing so, your life turns into waiting for reality to happen.  And what kind of life is that? 

So, in the worst of times, rejoice in God and give thanks for what you've been blessed with.  And remember, every storm runs out of rain. 

Advent Season

This time of year, we look forward to Christmas - to the celebration of the birth of Christ.  So, I will take this time to now bask in the presence of His glory. 

I recently purchased a devotional for this advent season, wishing and hoping to deepen my knowledge of this season and the true meaning of Christmas.  I'm not sure if it's just the way I'm perceiving and absorbing Scripture these days (it's definitely deeper than I used to!), but I was entranced with only the first entry! 

It is only in Him that we find our true dignity and purpose as people.  He is the author and finisher of our faith, the One who remains faithful even when we are faithless.

How true is this?!  This is just one of the many glorious things that I am very grateful to be a part of.  Just think of someone who remains faithful when we aren't.  Someone who will be there with open arms to receive you when you've been absent from the relationship for years and hasn't moved on.  That's right - no one comes to mind except our Savior.  Jesus Christ wants everyone.  He wants to accept you, me, my neighbor, your friends, the homeless, the non-believers - everyone!  No matter how long you've been away or haven't come to Him yet, he is waiting to welcome you into His loving arms.  I'm blessed beyond words. 

Give Thanks

So, I'm a little late, but what else is new?! Ha! Thanksgiving has come and gone, and I was sure to take a moment to reflect on everything that I am thankful for. Since November has started, I've seen post after post referring to things people are thankful for each day of this month. I didn't participate (let's face it, I probably wouldn't keep up with a daily post anyway...), but that doesn't mean I'm any less grateful or thankful than everyone else! So, now I'll post 30 things I'm thankful for in my life, in no particular order:
1. Health - I have my share of problems regarding my health, but for the most part, I'm pretty darn healthy! I don't have any major disorders or diseases, and what I am hit with, I am able to handle and get better in a flash (although some 'flashes' take a bit longer than others)
2. Mind - In the field I currently work in, I am reminded on a daily basis of some people's reality, and it's very scary. I am truly thankful that I am of sound mind. I do not have an alternate reality that only I live in, and for that, I am truly blessed and eternally grateful.
3. Work - For some, it takes months, and even YEARS, to find a job with their degree. Nowadays, it's not just about going to college and obtaining a degree - you have to also join the hundreds of thousands of people on the job hunt in order to put that degree to use! I am forever grateful that I was fortunate enough to have landed a job within only 2 months of graduating college.
4. Memories - Just think if memories did not exist... Seriously, contemplate that for a second, or even a few minutes. Now, it would be terrible, wouldn't it?! Memories are sacred moments of time that you can reflect on at any time. Especially in losing loved ones, memories help us to remember them and to cherish the time you spent with them, no matter how long ago.
5. Family - I could fill a 500-page book writing about my family and how important and influential they are to me. No matter the situation, they are always there for me 100% and support me through it all. Whether it be financially, spiritually, emotionally, physically - they're there. Always. And always (well, almost always) without question. I know that no matter what I'm faced with in this lifetime, I can count on my family to be there to face it with me: good or bad. We enjoy the happiness life has to offer, and we face the saddness that sometimes succumbs us. Not everyone can say that about their family. This world can be pretty scary, especially if you have to face it alone. On the darkest of days, my parents and siblings were there to show me the light. They always helped me to see the silver lining of any situation.
6. Food - As anyone who knows me, I love me some food! And usually, I'm not very pick, either. There are so many unfortunate souls that do not have enough food to nourish their bodies, and my heart breaks for them.
7. Rain - I know that here in Texas, it doesn't happen very often anymore, but I'm just thankful it happens at all! It was scary for a while there, but rain has nourished the earth once again, allowing trees and plants to flourish.
8. Holidays - Although they are stressful, I absolutely love the holidays and am thankful to get to spend them with loved ones! My favorite holiday is Christmas, which is no secret! I love the excitement of putting up the Christmas tree and decorating until I collapse. I love the colors and SO.MUCH.GLITTER that comes with it all. Then there's the shopping to put a smile one someone else's face! So joyous! I also love the cold that comes with it. There's just something in the atmosphere during the Christmas holidays that is utterly amazing - there are just no words. It's cold, there's Christmas spirit in the air, everyone is bustling about making plans and getting together, snuggling in front of the fireplace, watching Christmas movies....I could go on forever! I love it.
9. Friends - I've struggled with this topic for a little while, and off and on throughout my short 24 years, but I am truly thankful for the friends that I have. No matter the situation, I always have a friend that I can turn to when I'm in need, even if it's just for support. Although there isn't just one friend for everything, I have a lot of friends for it all! And for them, I am thankful. Let's face it, it takes a lot to put up with me ;).
10. Post-It's - I recently posted on Instagram my love for post-it's, and it's true: I love them! I'm so thankful for them because they help make my life [and job] so much easier! Most of the information I need to jot down is temporary - and what better way to do so than on post-it notes?! I obviously can't think of a better way.
11. Music - Without music, life would be boring (yes, I know not everyone has the luxury of listening to music)! It definitely livens up my life. It also helps to calm me down or get my mind off of things. Whether I'm mad, happy, sad, upset, silly - there's always a genre I can turn to in order to help with my mood. It's glorious!
12. God - God is my savior! Without Him, I do not exist. I do not eat, breathe, sleep, cry, or dream. He puts thorns in my life to allow me to struggle and become of better character. If He puts me to it, He gets me through it! I do admit that some challenges are way harder than others, but I always come out of the other side thankful for the storm. There's a reason for everything, and although it may be hard to accept sometimes, God has His plan for me, and I accept that and put my total faith in Him. I continue to grow closer to Him and allow Him to light my path in this journey through life.
13. Heart - I have a BIG one! I love so many people and so many things, and when someone is down on their luck or struggling to complete even the easiest task, my heart breaks. My heart feels for homeless people and animals alike, for those in need of food, that live in poverty, those stricken with any type of medical disease, for the lonely...I'm making myself sad just typing them all out! The list goes on and on. However, even though it causes sadness, I'm thankful for my big heart. It allows me to feel and give to those that otherwise are neglected. I do what I can when I can, and it's very rewarding.
14. Technology - Who knew that the invention of the computer would have come so far in such a short amount of time? Everything in life has its pro's and con's, and technology is not exempt from that, but technology makes our lives so much easier and more efficient. I realize that it's the cause of our fast-paced world, but there must be progress in the world, and technology continues to progress year after year! I mean, come on...I can see someone that is miles and miles away! I live two hours from my parents, but I can see them anytime I want (mostly anytime I want...as long as we're both connected to wi-fi haha). That's special. And a blessing when you're homesick or have to be away from your loved ones, whatever the reason.
15. Social Media - This kind of goes hand in hand with the technology, but I am thankful for social media. It helps to keep in touch with those we would otherwise lose contact with, and it also is quite entertaining! Additionally, it makes getting news out to people faster.
16. Marriage - We spend our lives in search of that one person we are going to spend 'forever' with. I am eternally thankful to have found my 'someone'! We've had our share of ups and downs, but Colten truly makes me a stronger person and is the most amazing husband I could have ever wanted for myself. I am blessed to have been able to marry him and continue our lives together.
17. Life - I am thankful to be alive! Every day is a blesing and we should cherish it as such. It's so easy to take for granted each and every day, but it is so important!
18. Pictures - The art of photography and being able to capture a moment in time is precious! I admit that I am addicted to photography and am always in love with the ability of those special moments we hold in our hearts to be displayed for all to see.
19. Small Towns - Growing up, I was not thankful for this, but as I've matured and grown up, I am truly thankful for small towns! The city is fast-paced and impersonal. Yes, everyone knows your business before you do in a small town, but it has charm and comfort that you can't find anywhere else.
20. Extended Family - My extended family is also there for me and my immediate family, no matter what. We all have our differences, but when it comes down to the wire, they're present and extending a hand wherever it's needed (most of them anyway). I also am thankful that our extended family gets together for every Holiday throughout the year. Being surrounded by family so often throughout the year is something that many people cannot relate to. I know that it's precious and I absolutely love that I'm a part of such a great tradition. Of course there's always the dullest crayon of the bunch, but we're all family and I love everyone in mine!
21. Blogging - Obviously, I do have somewhat of a life and cannot live on my blog each and every day, but I am thankful for the ability to share my life story and experiences with others in a way that I wouldn't be able to without my blog. I mean, face it, my life would suck without me ;). *see what I did there? HA!*
22. Books - Oh my word - what would I do without books?! Whether it be a physical book or an ebook (which my love for grows stronger every day), I am thankful for authors and publishers that grant me the opportunity to dive into someone else's life for a little while-whether it be for a few chapters or a couple hundred pages-and forget my reality just for a bit. Most of the time, it helps me to appreciate all that I have and the drama-free(ish) life that I live. I'm a book whore - and I love it!
23. Country - This topic is two-fold. I am thankful for THE country - as in, the land with open space and cows and chickens and sky and trees (a.k.a where I grew up). It is so peaceful to spend time in the country where there are no stresses to worry about: parking, traffic, noise, strangers, etc. I am thankful for every day that I get to go back to that place and run wild and free (okay, we all know there is no running involved...). The second part of this is that I am thankful for country MUSIC! It pretty much sums up life. Love, hate, life, death, tragedy, cheating, breaking up and making up, cowboys and pick-up trucks...you name it and there is a song for it! It always puts me in such a great mood. Yes, I'm a country girl and damn proud of it! *no matter which city I may live in*
24. Little Things - I am truly thankful for the little things in life. I don't have to live an extravagent life and take a zillion trips across the world to be happy. I love living a simple life. And I cherish the little things.
25. Laughter - We all know there are many days that just don't go your way. We all have them, most more frequently than we'd like. But laughter always brightens my day. Whether it be at the office or at home or just a phone call, laughing always makes me feel better, and for that, I am thankful!
26. Faith - Without faith, I would not put such trust in God, and I would be miserable. I am thankful that I am filled with faith in God that He has a plan for me to live a happy and prosperous life.
27. Education - As much as I disliked it, I am thankful for the education that I've had the opportunity to possess. Without it, I would not be at a job that I love with such amazing co-workers. It wasn't the path I saw for myself the entire time, but it was all worth it in the end!
28. Love - Without love, how happy can you truly be? Whether you love your friends, family, neighbors, pets, spouse, significant other, God, educators, co-workers.... love is fragile and should be cherished. Love is abundant in my life in every aspect that I can think of, and for that, my friends, I am utterly thankful - words cannot express just how much.
29. Crazy - "Crazy?" you ask? Yes, crazy. I am thankful for crazy. Not the mentally crazy that you're psychotic and don't know what you're doing, but the crazy that allows life to be more than a boring routine of work, home, sleep, repeat. I'm thankful for the crazy that is in my life. One thing that comes to mind when I think of 'crazy' is my family. We are crazy. We will act crazy, say crazy things, DO crazy things, it's all there. And I love it! And it's amazing. And I am thankful for crazy.
30. Unanswered Prayers - We all have those prayers we make when we think we know exactly what would make us happy at that particular time, but I'm thankful for those prayers that went unanswered. I will reiterate that everything happens for a reason, and what we think may make us happy may turn around on us and make us totally miserable. God has His plan, and if the prayer went unanswered, it was for a reason. Without everything I asked for in life, I am truly happy with who I am today and where I am in my life. I'm not perfect and I don't have a perfect life - believe me! But I'm happy. And who knows if I'd be happy of those prayers would've been answered? I don't, but I'm thankful for them.

Of course I am thankful for much more than this, but I feel this is a great list that includes a wide variety of things I am thankful for. I'm also thankful for the holiday of Thanksgiving, in which we are especially reminded to be thankful for what we have. It's easy to forget sometimes...we all do it. So, give thanks and be appreciative of everything you are blessed with throughout the year! I know I am and will.

No Time Like the Present

Old habits die hard!  I was taking Plexus on a regular basis for a little over a month and felt absolutely great! However, due to our financial situation, I was not able to continue on it last month - and I could definitely tell a difference!  But, I'm excited to say, I have purchased and RECEIVED this month's supply!  I couldn't be happier to finally get back on it.  It makes me feel great (loads of energy, which is in dire need lately), and I was losing weight.  Granted (and this is great news, people), I didn't gain weight in the month I was off of it (okay...maybe a few pounds, but that Halloween candy is sooooo good!), but I feel better on it, and I can't wait to get back to my confidant self.  :)

Everything else feels kind of chaotic as well.  The apartment has started to become such a MESS lately.  And the sad truth of that is that I have z.e.r.o. energy to do anything about it.  While I'm not home, I have all sorts of ideas and motivation to tackle it, but once I'm home - nope.  It does not get done.  However, I truly feel these 16-hour days have a lot to do with it.  I work three 16-hour days in a row every week.  Talk about exhausting!  By the time I get home, I literally shower and go to bed.  And this past weekend, I did literally nothing.  I caught up on tv shows and did not pay one ounce of attention to the housework that needed to be done.  Not good.  Not good at all.  Thankfully, I have an amazing husband who keeps the apartment from being taken over by rodents of all shapes and sizes... :D.  However, I need to focus and put int the effort to organize it and maintain a clean house.  I really think with Christmas coming up, it'll be a great time to go through everything and organize it.  Plus, Christmas is absolutely my favorite time of year! What's not to be excited about?!

I think some of my weird feelings lately also come from going home a lot.  At LEAST two weekends a month, I'm in the burg visiting with my family and being sure I'm there for Pops.  I know it's a good thing that I'm doing and I love spending time with him, but it definitely catches up with me the following weekend - which leaves ZERO weekends to be productive.  It's a never-ending cycle. *sigh*  But I'm praying to break out of it soon, and I know getting back on Plexus is going to do me wonders!  Bring.It.On.  That pretty much sums it all up.  In a nutshell.

So, basically, I'm just ready to become a better 'me' and get back to having energy and feeling great about life!  Not that I don't feel great about it now, but I'm kind of just 'content'.  Which is fine for a while, but I'm ready for my optimism and positivity to shine right through!  So, I'm going to continue praying about it and get back on Plexus TOMORROW.  There's no better time than the present to make the necessary changes that I am looking for.
