Awesome Sauce is {AWESOME}!

We did it! We pulled off a surprise 50th birthday party for my mom this past weekend! Hooray! It was a lot of work, but it was totally worth it! Here's how it all went down:

For months, we planned and bought decorations and did some diy projects and planned some more and lied. How do you not have a surprise party without having to lie?! I tried my best not to, and I did pretty good right up until that weekend, which I consider a success! I digress. To make the party a little bit more special, Hilary and I worked on several DiY projects to add a personal touch. She worked tirelessly on a balloon wreath she had seen pinned on Pinterest. Little did we know just how long it would take or just how many balloons it would take! She seriously bought out every black balloon Hobby Lobby had at one point! I came up with a photo booth idea which involved some butcher paper, foam letters, and a little table set up explaining what the heck it was. And, we both {along with the help of dad compiling photos} created a black and white '50' photo collage of mom's 50 years of life! Seriously, it was a lot of mom's face! That thing was the most frustrating, stressful, and difficult thing! But, we didn't give up {even though it took an entire day}, and she loved it! Or so she said...

So, the day before the party, my sister and I left Austin at like 6:30 in the morning. Y'all, that's way earlier than I ever leave for work! Have I ever mentioned that I am not a morning person?! No? Well, now I have. I don't do mornings!! But, we hit up Starbucks {and I got my first red cup of the season!} and we were on our way. We stopped in Bastrop for some grocery shopping, which was entertaining all in itself. Picture this: Hilary and I in HEB at 7:00am. Hyped up on coffee. Me looking rough as I basically just rolled out of bed and threw on a sweater. Hilary skipping through the aisles. Spending dad's money. You're welcome. :)

After that, we finally made it to the burg, like 4 hours later! But that's what happens when the two of us go shopping freakishly early and get to spend other people's money! {disclaimer: I will probably mention my joy of spending other people's money like five billion more times, okay? Okay.} Dad had also stayed home from work that day - there was a lot to do to prepare for the big day! We also remembered to hide our locations on our Find My Friends app. Go us! I think it would've been pretty suspicious if mom were to see that both dad and I were at their house on Friday morning...hmm... While at home, we baked up a storm! We made two cream puff cakes, dipped oreos in some melted chocolate, and we diy'd. Yep. We made a "photo booth" {without the booth} for guests to sign and to take crazy pictures in front of. Just something fun! Dad cleaned out the kettle for stew, and we dropped off everything party related at our cousin's house down the road - it's like we were never even there! We even had to have covert trash, because if mom were to find empty cartons of white chocolate pudding, cream cheese, chocolate chips, and so much more, she would've been a bit curious, to say the least. I even went as far as to not use their restroom - again, she would've been suspicious if she saw a day's worth of tampon trash in her bathroom, knowing it wasn't hers and praying it wasn't dad's! Yep, I went there. You're welcome! :)

Luckily, mom had a few stops to make on her way home, so if we were at the house when she eventually got home from work, it wasn't a big deal! Needless to say, dad, Hil, and I had a blast cooking and preparing for the party and having to hide it all. Sneaky, sneaky!

The PLAN was to go shopping for a little girls' day on Saturday. Up to this point, it had gone off without a hitch! We left the house at 10ish that morning, which was right on time! However, this meant a lot of the cleaning and decorating was left up to dad and Josh - good luck guys! Ha! Us girls headed out for the day and had a blast! We hit up Maurice's, JC Penny's, Best Buy, Dress Barn, and Marshall's, stopping only for a delicious lunch at Olive Garden! Well, mom literally would not stop shopping! How the heck were we supposed to get her to go home without any urgency behind it?! We didn't have a clue. Eventually, we became 'tired' and it was getting late. We left Rosenburg at 5:00pm, which is what time we were supposed to be arriving at her party! Fail. Just fail. Hilary and I were literally freaking out while mom was trying on some clothes in the last few stores. Texts were also exchanged between the two of us and dad - she just wouldn't stop shopping! It did make for a good laugh though - but it also caused my stress level to fly through the roof! After the months of preparation and planning, we couldn't let the whole thing unravel now!

Well, we didn't, thankfully! We stopped at Wal-Mart for a few things before heading home, and boy was she surprised when we arrived! Since it was then 6:30pm instead of 5pm, it was already dark {thank you daylight savings!}, so the party-goers had a great plan...my cousins went into town and pretty much bought out every glow stick/bracelet/necklace they had! So, when we drove up {in the dark}, all we could see was a distant greenish/blueish glow from under the trees... At this point, Hilary and I didn't even know what was going on, so we definitely didn't lie when mom asked what the heck was going on! :) Win-win! Everyone gathered at the cattle guard, complete with a million glow sticks, to surprise her! I rolled the windows down, and they began singing 'Happy Birthday'. Mom finally realized what was happening and she was truly in shock! Haha! She was planning her party for next Saturday, so she was shocked everyone was already there to celebrate two weeks early! Gotcha!! {side note: it was hilarious, as my cousin recently had a surprise bday/graduation party when she was planning her own party for later this year. Mom thought this was hilarious, and we thought it was even more hysterical becasue the exact same thing was about to happen to her...she just had no idea!}

So, she was surrounded by family and friends and had a great time! There were lots of laughs, jello shots, tons of food, lots of drinks, gifts, more laughs, and lots of pictures! It was definitely a party she'll never forget! Afterward, she said the only thing she regretted or was unhappy about {I forget how it was worded...it was a long day!} was that she was late to her own party! Ha! Dad also kept saying that she was spending his money all day! Boy, do we really like to spend his money ;) haha! And now, lots of pictures!!!

As you can tell from the last set of pictures, Chelsea didn't disappoint! She made and brought about a million {so it seemed} jello shots! She was highly entertaining, to say the least! Thanks, Chels!

I seriously slept almost the entire next day! All of the stress I had been carrying around for the past month was finally lifted away after the party and I was able to relax. I even slept most of Monday... Yes, I'll admit it! And no, it wasn't because I was hungover. I was just tired!

And to absolutely EVERYONE that helped in any way at all {there are a lot of you!}...

THANK YOU!

Without the help of family and friends, this party would not have been possible. From making and bringing cakes and desserts, to showing up early to help decorate, to helping us celebrate ... thank you so much! Not only did Dad, Hilary, Josh, and I really appreciate it, but most importantly, I know Mom absolutely loved all of the time and effort that was put into a party just for her! Thank you to everyone again! The surprise was a huge success! :)

A Quarter of a {Century}. Hooray!

It's my birthday! And, I expect lots and lots of birthday wishes today! Seriously. Get to it, people! Okay, okay, I don't really expect it. But, it'd be nice :). It is my day after all...

I am blessed to be celebrating 25 amazing years today, even if that does mean I'm a quarter of a century old! Thanks, family. Just thanks. However, I do get to constantly remind my mother that it means she's going to be half of a century old soon. *mwahahaha*

These past 25 years hold so many ups and downs, it's ridiculous. But without them, I wouldn't be who I am today. And today, I'm celebrating my birth. I'm celebrating the day that I entered into this world, to be held in the arms of the most amazing parents and awesome big sister (even if I didn't know it at the time). I'm celebrating the good AND the bad. God has only prepared me for what is to come, weathering every storm that comes my way with the support and love of my husband, my family, and friends. I couldn't and wouldn't have come as far as I have without any of them. For that, I am grateful. I'm a pretty lucky lady!
And now, some highlights of the past 25 years in no particular order:
  • Holidays with family, including with those that are no longer here such as my Granny Getschmann, Granny Mendel, and Pops. I miss them so much and cherish every memory that I have!
  • Every St. John 4th of July Picnic we've attended {that I can remember}
  • Vacation to Big Bend National Park
  • Vacation to Missouri
  • Numerous camping trips to Lake Somerville and Lake Belton - even the few trips to Lake Medina!
  • Spirit sprinkles :)
  • Countless sporting functions, from volleyball (varsity team as a freshman and being named to the All-State team), to softball (soooo many cold days/nights and Coach Oden driving me from a band competition to a district game in which the Ganado coach's windshield was shattered...oops!), to track & field (regional track meet that I participated in for shotput...), to two-a-days (I was usually injured...ha!), including Little League - I believe there was even some soccer in there!
  • Vacation to the Frio River
  • Memories from being on the drill team
  • Band. 'Nuff said! ;)
  • The friendships through it all {and for those of you that stuck around all this time...thank you!}
  • Leaving home and moving to a big, new city for college, in which homesickness kicked in
  • Marrying my best friend
  • College hardships
  • Sexy Hexy
  • Concerts
  • Trips to Corpus to visit my sister on the weekends
  • ROAD TRIPS! {especially our recent trip to Dallas}
  • Club Volleyball {including the bajillion photos that were always taken...thanks Mom! And, I cannot think about those days and the pictures without thinking of Stacie laughing at mom harassing her with the camera!! Great times!}
  • C.C.D. in St. John
  • Jumping into freezing cold water at the lake in the middle of winter for $5
  • Every injury I've ever experienced playing high school sports
  • The joy that high school sports brought me, especially volleyball
  • Confirmation
  • Birthday parties, especially my 21st and the one we had at Ariel's house in high school...so fun!
  • Friday night football games
  • The unending support of my family to every sporting function, football game to watch me dance/play in the band, support through school, especially through club volleyball and when I made the choice not to continue collegiately
  • Scrapbooks
  • Summers at home doing chores and eating fabulous homemade lunches at my grandparents' house
  • Soaring with the eagles ;)
  • The loss of my grandmother
  • The loss of my other grandmother
  • The recent loss of my grandfather
  • But honestly, the weekends at home with family just hanging out, watching television or into our normal, random shenanigans around the farm were and always will be my absolute favorite memories that I will forever hold near and dear to my heart {not to get sappy or anything}. Seriously. To you, it may sound boring and no fun, but trust me, it's far from both! I love just spending quality time with my family {and extended family} just being ourselves and doing nothing fancy. So amazing. {I'd totally link to some blog posts here, but it's pretty much every.single.one, so...yeah. Just go check out my blog archive!}
These are only a few of the life events that have brought me to where I am today, and for each one, good or bad, I cherish. In my short 25 years, I've accomplished a lot. I'm married. I've graduated college. I've begun my career. We're getting more and more financially stable. And most importantly, I'm happy. I know there are rough days, but the good days far surpass them! I hope and pray {and know} that the next 25 will be just as amazing, if not even more so! I know God has a plan for my life and that this is only the beginning.

And speaking of the future, in light of my milestone birthday {can you even call 25 a milestone?? I am anyway...it's my birthday after all!}, I've been working on and have finally completed my 30 before 30 list! And now, to share with all of you, because I know you're just dying to know. :)

I know God has a plan for me, and everything happens in His time, but here are 30 things that I want and aim to do in the next five years, before I'm thirty {in no particular order}:
  1. Kayak on Lady Bird Lake
  2. Make zucchini bread {and have it be amazing, duh}
  3. Create a routine of regular family Scripture study & prayer, and stick to it
  4. 'Tour' the capitol in Austin
  5. Be intentional in my marriage
  6. Be a homeowner
  7. Build up to and consistently work out at least four days/week
  8. Visit another country
  9. Donate money to charity
  10. Take a cooking class with my husband
  11. Learn German
  12. Participate in a 5k
  13. Work only one job
  14. Build up our savings account {no goal amount at this time, but keep a lookout for it to come!}
  15. Spend the night under the stars
  16. Project 365: blogged.
  17. Have a paint fight with my husband & photograph it
  18. Pay off at least two student loans
  19. Become a mommy
  20. Fill all frames in our home with actual pictures of people that we know
  21. Learn more about Catholicism
  22. Visit New York City
  23. Buy a DSLR camera and learn how to use it
  24. Lose a total {at least} of 60 pounds
  25. Take a trip with each of my siblings
  26. Learn to crochet
  27. Attend a small group Bible study regularly
  28. Read 100 books in a year
  29. Become a runner
  30. Visit a winery
I look forward to the next five years to see just how many of these I can accomplish! Some of them will be easy and some won't, but I'm excited to see it all play out. I know that I will continue to have the love and support of my family and husband to encourage me daily and keep me focused on what's important in life. So, whether it be the good, the bad, or the ugly, I say

BRING.IT.ON!

Here's to the next twenty-five years! :-)

Happy Birthday, {Colten}!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, COLTEN!

It's my sweet, sweet husband's birthday today! Hooray!

That's reason enough to celebrate, right?!  Heck yes!

I honestly have no idea where I would be in my life right now if it weren't for my dear husband.  Seriously, he is the most patient, understanding, and laid back person I've ever met!  And thank goodness for that! Because he's all mine!  I could not have asked for a better husband.  As always, God knew exactly what He was doing when he made our paths cross!  My husband is exactly what I needed, exactly when I needed it.  And I pray that my wonderful husband feels the same about me! :)

My first impression of my husband was that he was a redneck.  Straight up, out of the woods, redneck.  And I know many of my friends and family that have met him probably thought (or still think) the same.  Yes, my husband is as country as it gets without being redneck.  And sometimes, he proves he's got some redneck in him.  But although that's what I initially thought when I first laid eyes on him, he proved from the very first 'howdy' (yes, his first words to me were 'howdy') that he was a true gentleman.  Of course, the more I got to know him, the more he relaxed and showed his 'not so gentlemanly' side, but he's always treated me with the utmost respect and care - and for that, I'm eternally grateful.

We have been married for a year and a half as of 6/12/13.  Holy cow! Where the heck does time go?!  I can't believe it's been so long already, but it's been such an amazing year and a half that I wouldn't trade for anything.  Many marriages have their ups and downs, and ours is no different.  There are days that we simply don't agree on anything - or so it seems.  But we've always been so good about talking things out and never steaming mad or upset for long.  I absolutely cherish our relationship, and I am more in love with him now than I was on my wedding day.  It's true - true love is AMAZING

Our first dance as husband and wife was to 'From this Moment On' by Shania Twain and Bryan White.  I've loved this song my entire life, and I would always think that it was exactly how I wanted to feel towards my future husband.  Colten wasn't too keen on the song at first - I honestly don't remember what he had requested be our first song, but he knew how much it meant to me and he finally okay'd it!  I was one happy girl!  But seriously, that song just gets to me every.single.time!
I do swear that I'll always be there.
I'd give anything and everything and I will always care.
Through weakness and strength,
Happiness and sorrow,
For better, for worse,
I will love you with every beat of my heart.

From this moment life has begun
From this moment you are the one
Right beside you is where I belong
From this moment on
From this moment I have been blessed
I live only for your happiness
And for your love I'd give my last breath
From this moment on

I give my hand to you with all my heart
Can't wait to live my life with you, can't wait to start
You and I will never be apart
My dreams came true because of you
From this moment as long as I live
I will love you, I promise you this
There is nothing I wouldn't give
From this moment on

You're the reason I believe in love
And you're the answer to my prayers from up above
All we need is just the two of us
My dreams came true because of you

From this moment as long as I live
I will love you, I promise you this
There is nothing I wouldn't give
From this moment
I will love you as long as I live
From this moment on

I tear up every time I hear this song, as I remember my wedding day and all of the joy, happiness, and love associated with that.  My heart melts.  My husband proved to me again, during that time, that he truly loved me and wanted me to be happy - I know a first dance song may not seem important to lots of guys, but he let me have my way anyway, and that's what a marriage is all about right ladies?! Ha, just kidding, of course!

So, today, I wish my darling husband a very happy birthday and that all of his wishes come true.  I pray that his life is all he dreamed of and more, and that he continues to love me each and every day.  He is amazingly supportive, and even just venting to him about something that's weighing on my mind or that I'm upset about helps tremendously.  That's real love.  When all he has to do is look at me, listen to what's bothering me, and hug me, I know that I'm with the man of my dreams and the man God intended for me to walk beside on this journey of life.

Happy birthday, baby! I hope you have a great day and that you have a fantastic year ahead of you - I know our future holds greatness, and living life with you is amazing.  Thank you for always being there for me and for supporting me in every way possible.  You are amazing, and I am blessed to be your wife.  I will cherish you forever, and I thank God for allowing us to venture on this path together.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY {JOSH}!

Today, I am wishing the most amazing brother a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Saturday, we celebrated Josh's birthday at Olive Garden. And as always, it was a great time! Mom & Dad drove into town and ended up spending the night with Josh. Sometimes, spontaneity works out better than well-laid plans! It was great to see everyone and to celebrate a special occasion.
My brother has always been a very important part of my life, and I am truly blessed to have so many wonderful memories with him!  I know that no matter what, I can always count on him for support and strength.  We've been through a lot, and the trials and tribulations have only made us stronger and closer together.  I will forever cherish my 'little' brother - who's much taller than me and has been for quite some time now!

I love that no matter what we're doing, he can always make me laugh.  There is NEVER a dull moment with him, and it's truly a blessing.  From even the smallest things, he finds the joy in it all.  And man, the faces that kid makes....

I will reiterate - NEVER A DULL MOMENT!!

As younger kids, I took him for granted.  I didn't truly appreciate everything that my life was blessed with as a young child, but boy do I now!  I cherish every chance we get to spend time together, even if it's just to go see a movie or grab some food.  I know that our time is precious, and I'm grateful for all of it.

We have countless memories, a lot of which we still bring up and talk about today!  From turning his ears blue on the bus ride to our grandma's house from school, to *allegedly* putting him in the dryer at home, to supporting him at sporting events, to countless camping trips and long nights - the $500 comfy pants were just brought up on Saturday!  Haha.  I love our relationship, and I look forward to what our future holds - which hopefully includes spending much more time together!

The sad truth is that we only live across the street from each other and hardly see each other maybe twice a month.  SO SAD!  This must change soon, and I vow to try my best!  Even if that means harassing him until he FINALLY remembers to give me his work schedule, as it changes weekly.  :) hehe...

Josh,

You have grown up to be such an amazing and inspirational young man.
You may not see it yourself, but you are a role model to most.
Your faith is strong, of which I am truly thankful.
Your character is strong and dependable - you are faced with such challenges, of which you always overcome.
You are loved, and you will never be alone.  I am always here for you, no matter what the circumstances or the time of day.
I love you and truly do cherish the time we spend together, regardless of what we're doing.
You are an important part of my life.
You are talented.
You are humble.
You are worthy of the greatest gifts.
You deserve the world, and I know you will strive to achieve your dreams.
You bring such joy and laughter to so many people's lives.
And although I may not say it enough - I LOVE YOU!

My prayer for you is that you continue being yourself and making a difference.  Because even if you don't believe you are, you truly are.  You have such a huge heart and are exactly where God has meant for you to be at this point in your life.  Bigger and better things are to come, all of which you are deserving.  I pray that you continue to find happiness in even the darkest days.  And always know that your family is behind you 100%.  Whether you need to talk, vent, play mindless video games, go out to eat, just get away, or a shoulder to cry on, I'm here for you.  Please don't ever doubt that.

Happy Birthday, {Dad}!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DADDY!

It's that time again - birthday time!  And in honor of my dad's birthday, this post.

My dad has always been there for me!  I know that we don't always see eye to eye - never have, and most likely never will - but I know that I can always count on him to support me and be there for me to turn to when life gets hard.  Our relationship now is stronger than ever, and for that, I'm eternally grateful. He's a strong, caring, loving, funny family-man and role model.

No matter the situation, my dad gets the job done - whatever that may be - and keeps pushing forward.  With the things going on in his life lately, I know he has rough moments that I can't even fathom in my short 24 years of life experience.  BUT, I know that he's strong, and he has an amazing relationship with his wife (my mommy!) whom he can push forward with, and together, they do.
Looking back on those short 24 years, I have so many amazing memories with my dad that I will truly cherish forever.

From those camping trips growing up...

...to little league games...

...to family holidays...
Infamous Thanksgiving bonfire!
Making stew with his daddy!
Cutest Christmas Couple
Never a dull moment :) LOVE IT!

...to 'farming' life...

...to the special moments with my dad at my wedding...

...to making sausage for the first time...

...to the countless crazy family moments...

...to visiting home on the weekends...

...to every special family moment that I will cherish forever...

...to every one of those moments when I just needed a hug from my dad.

My dad is a very influential person in my life and always has been.  I love him more than words could ever express, and I'm truly thankful for being blessed with such an amazing father.  He's taken care of scraped knees from my toddler years up to high school sports (softball comes to mind here...).  He's blocked our internet access when we misbehaved (yes, we 'sometimes' misbehaved as kids...) and sometimes even when we didn't.  He's shown me what it's like to live a life for God and to have a loving marriage.  He's shown me strength and courage and hope and how to go after your dreams.

But greatest of all, he's shown me love.  Even on those days that I disappointed him - and I know there are many... - he's shown me his love for me.  Especially on those important days, such as my wedding day, he's shown me his love.  He's loved me since the day I was born and I know that he will continue to love me, no matter where life leads us, until his very last day.

Well dad, I know I don't say it near often enough, but I LOVE YOU!  I've always loved you, and I will continue to love you forever.  You're an inspiration to Colten and I's marriage, and you're a role model of a parent.  Thank you, dad, for all that you've done for me and for my siblings.  You've always loved your family, made us feel important, and shown us that love.  Because of you (and mom), I'm the strong woman that I am today.  Life throws us curve balls, and all too often, it's so easy to get caught up in the negativity that we're presented with, but you've taught me that as long as I have love and faith, I will get through the bumps in the road.  You've taught me that as long as I have my family by my side, I can accomplish anything I set my mind to.  I know that I've put you both through a lot (isn't that what a child is supposed to do to their parents?? hehe), but in all seriousness, I thank you for everything.  I thank you for not giving up on me even if it seemed easier to; I thank you for giving and showing me your love; I thank you for being you and for sharing your life's experiences and lessons with your family; I thank you for supporting me, even if I failed.

thank you, daddy.  I love you! ♥

 &&

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!
